As an attorney, Jennifer J. Ator represented both plaintiffs and defendants in commercial and employment litigation matters in state and federal court. Jennifer was also a Florida Supreme Court Certified Civil Circuit and County Court mediator, handling all types of litigation matters. In 2011, she was recognized as a Florida Rising Star by Super Lawyers Magazine. She is also a member of the multi-million dollar advocates forum.
Before law school, Ms. Ator taught the Communications and Broadcast Arts Magnet Program in the Broward County Schools. Ms. Ator started her legal career at a nationally known individual employee rights law firm. Thereafter, she handled employment matters for employers and corporations at the oldest firm in Miami and then practiced in the litigation department at an international law firm that was named in the top five litigation departments in the United States.
Jennifer was committed to working for the profession, not just in the profession. She was appointed to the American Bar Association House of Delegates by The Florida Bar Board of Governors and served from 2002 to 2006. She also served on The Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division Board of Governors from 2001 until 2007. In addition, she was very active within the American Bar Association. She is a former active member of the Young Lawyers Division and a past YLD Fellow. She served the Council for the Law Practice Management Section, on its Publications Board, and penned a regular management column for Law Practice Magazine. Also, she is a former member of Council and a former Division Director for the General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Division. On a local level, Jennifer is a past Chair of the Solo Small Firm Committee of the Dade County Bar Association, served a term on its Board of Directors, and is a past-president of the Young Lawyers Section.
Jennifer has written and published on employment law topics. Her law review article Same-Sex Sexual Harassment After Oncale v. Sundowner Offshore Services, Inc.: Overcoming the History of Judicial Discrimination in Light of the "Common Sense" Standard was published in the American University Journal of Gender & Law. She authored a chapter on “Employment Law in the Solo and Small Firm” for Effectively Staffing Your Law Firm, which was published by the American Bar Association in 2009. Moreover, she has co-authored materials on sexual harassment and damages in discrimination claims for the American Bar Association Labor and Employment Section, and authored articles on practice management issues for the American Bar Association General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Division. Jennifer has also written and spoken on how to deal with difficult people in the workplace and other employee management issues.
Jennifer served as a Councilperson in Miami Springs, Florida. She was first elected in 2009, was reelected in 2011. She unsuccessfully ran for Mayor of Miami Springs in 2013. She was selected to participate in the inaugural program of The Good Government Initiative at the University of Miami, where early-career elected officials from Palm Beach to Monroe County are receiving over sixty hours of training to develop skills to be more effective in elected office.
